Maria Baer’s Guide to Indy!

09 Friday Mar 2018

Through my India Hicks journey, I met Maria Baer! She loves a color-coded closet as much as I do, and launched her own residential organizing and party styling business last year, The Baer Minimalist. She will be sharing some her closet tips and tricks on an upcoming post, featuring my closet.

DSC_0375.JPG

1.What part of Indy do you live in?

I live on the Northwest side of Indy, right by Trader’s Point Creamery (who has the most delicious cheese board around by the way).

  1. What is our cities “hidden gem”?

I think the “hidden gem” is what a gem of a city we are! This city is filled with amazing culture, endless opportunities for entrepreneurs, the tastiest food and cocktail scene and the ability to find yourself just hours from so many other great cities in just a few hours. I am such a HUGE fan of Indianapolis.

  1. What is your favorite restaurant?

Hands down, Oakley’s Bistro! This has been our special occasion spot for the last 10 years – in fact, for my husbands 25th birthday, I gifted him a “Chef for a Day” experience where he got to work alongside their amazing team all day, and I got to join him that night for a 3-course dinner. Best gift I’ve ever given. 😉

  1. Where is your favorite place to take an out-of-town guest?

My husband and I absolutely love supporting local restaurants, so there is always a restaurant tour on deck when friends come in town. Exploring the International Marketplace near Lafayette and 38th Street always turns up a really amazing authentic spot that we’ve not experienced before. But staples of our tour also include Bluebeard, Spoke & Steele and the Livery.

  1. Where is the best place to grab a cocktail?

I am crazy about the “Fire and Ice” cocktail at Delicia – as that ice cube melts, the drink gets spicier and spicier! Seriously, so delicious!

  1. Where is a great place to pick up a unique gift?

I love consumable gifts – as a professional organizer, I try not to add a ton of clutter to people’s lives. So on that note, I am all about gifting macarons from Gallery Pastry Shop or a unique experience, like a calligraphy class, a chef dinner or a massage.

  1. Where can you get the best cup of coffee?

I’ve recently invested a little too much of my paycheck into the Spice Latte at Coat Check Coffee. Have you tried this? If not, my treat!!

  1. What is your favorite part about living in Indy?

I moved to Indy 12 years ago when I graduated from the University of North Dakota! I only knew a handful of people in the city (including my future husband, who was the reason I landed here) and was very apprehensive about what the future would hold. I’ve been overwhelmed by the kindness of everyone I’ve crossed paths with, the ability to start a thriving business with the help of several mentors and the deep-rooted friendships that I’ve developed. Indianapolis is definitely HOME to me!

  1. Who is your favorite Indy based artist, designer, writer, or blogger?

Besides you?! I love Beth Chappo, another transplant to this great city, who writes over at “Seersucker and Saddles.”

  1. What would you like to see next for our city?

I would love to see Indy get more recognition for being as amazing as it is (although, it wouldn’t be our little hidden gem anymore, would it?). I feel like we do not get the credit we deserve and there are some incredible innovators in this city that are making waves in their respective industries. I’m looking forward to seeing what the future holds for us!

We hope this inspires you to try new experiences in our little slice of the midwest!

1.What part of Indy do you live in? Butler Tarkington, just north of downtown

2. What is our cities “hidden gem”? I think our hidden gem is Mass Ave. In the heart of downtown, it can feel a little commercial, with the nearly-empty mall and chain restaurants. But Mass Ave has an energy and character that you wouldn’t necessarily find unless you knew it was there!

3. What is your favorite restaurant? It’s so hard to pick a favorite! It depends on what I’m in the mood for – I love Union 50, Delicia, BruBurger, Patachou, snd there’s nothing better than a Dirty Martini at St. Elmo.

4. Where is your favorite place to take an out-of-town guest? St. Elmo for drinks and shrimp cocktail.

5. Where is the best place to grab a cocktail? As already stated, I love the dirty martinis at St. Elmo or Harry & Izzy’s, but Plat 99 at the Alexander has great cocktails too.

6. Where is a great place to pick up a unique gift? Silver in the City is my favorite spot to grab a quick gift.

7. Where can you get the best cup of coffee? I am probably the furthest thing from a coffee snob, so I’m partial to just a plain cup of coffee at Cafe Patachou.

8. What is your favorite part about living in Indy? My favorite part about living in Indy is you can get pretty much anywhere in 25 minutes (or less). I love going from downtown to the northside, and everywhere in between. There are great restaurants, great shopping, and a great standard of living. It’s a really fun place to be a newlywed, and as we look to the future, Indianapolis is the perfect place for starting a family.

9. Who is your favorite Indy based artist, designer, writer, or blogger ? My favorite Indy-based blogger is Kathleen Post (Lemon Blonde). She recently relocated to LA, but I love her effortless, feminine, cool-girl style.

10. What would you like to see next for our city (Anything you feel we are missing or a direction we are moving toward that you would like to see move forward)? I would love for Indy to keep making way in the food world. There are some amazing, nationally-acclaimed restaurants here (Bluebeard, Milktooth) and it’s fun to have a constant stream of new places to try.

We hope this inspires you to try new experiences in our little slice of the midwest!

Beauty Counter with Morgan Corya

baby

1. What is the benefit of using Beauty Counter products versus other brands?
Beautycounter is a skin care and make up line that has banned 1,500 ingredients that they will never use in their products because they are known cancer-causers or hormone disruptors. Beautycounter uses the best available data to screen these ingredients for safety and effectiveness. We spend a lot of money at the grocery store for organic and natural food, lets use the same mind-set for skin care! Our mission is to get safer products into the hands of all people.

2. What is your favorite Beauty Counter product?
Oh, where do I start?! I love all of their products that I have personally tried. Because of my acne-prone, somewhat oily skin, I have gravitated towards the Balancing Collection. I use a charcoal bar as face wash every morning and night. Then I follow with a few drops of Balancing Oil, counterintuitive, I know, but oil helps heal acne! Lastly, I use the Day or Night cream. Once or twice a week you will catch me with my charcoal face mask, it helps draw out any impurities.

3. What product would you suggest for babies?
The Baby Balm, hands down. For babies, its a great all over moisturizer, especially during the dry winter months, or for chapped little drooling lips year-round. People who have children who suffer from eczema have also found that using Baby Balm as a spot treatment has vastly improved their child’s skin! It is like Windex in My Big Fat Greek Wedding! I use it on my acne at night when my face is super sensitive, I use it as a thick hand cream and for cuticles, I use it as an eye make up remover.

4. What is a good product to have for these summer months?
Quick story and I promise it answers the question! I went to the Sam Hunt concert at Klipsch this weekend. I was nervous because we were getting there around 6 and I knew the sun would be blazing. Before the concert, I used Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer (it contains SPF 20), I set it with the mattifying powder, then set my makeup with the Nourishing Rosewater Mist. After hanging out in the lawn, with a few drinks, dancing and singing my heart out, I got home (a little later than I anticipated, 2am) and my make up was still perfect. I never felt like I looked sweaty and our pictures turned out so adorable! So, to answer your question, Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer, Mattifying powder and Rosewater Mist.
Beautycounter also carries a sunblock lotion, body stick, face stick and lip balm. It contains non-nano zinc oxide, meaning the zinc oxide particles are too large to enter your bloodstream. It is literally a protective layer you rub on your skin to protect it from the harsh rays, but you do not have any zinc oxide entering your body. Perfect for kids and adults!

5. How did you get started with Beauty Counter?
One of my friends introduced me to it and I saw significant improvement in my skin health, texture and overall feel. I had suffered from gluten induced dermatitis. I cut all gluten and wheat out of my diet and couldn’t figure out why my elbows and knees were still on fire with little itchy bumps. After some research, I discovered most, if not all, body washes and shampoos contain gluten. I immediately switched to the Beautycounter Daily Shampoo and Daily Conditioner along with the Citrus Mimosa Body Wash and Citrus Mimosa lotion. My breakouts on my body were visibly better after one shower. I am thankful for my body’s outward response; it needed a safer, more natural change. And that is what I gave it! Since then, I have switched all of my skin care and makeup to Beautycounter and I will never look back!

I urge you to go to youtube and watch “We all Deserve Better” video. It helps explain Beautycounter’s mission!

I am offering a special for all of Preppy Girl’s followers! Get in touch with me thru my email (morgan.corya@yahoo.com) to place an order, mention that you read this interview and I will throw in a free gift with purchase. Also, receive a free gift when you host a social in June!

Sincerely,

Morgan Corya

1.What part of Indy do you live in? South Broad Ripple a.k.a SoBro.

2. What is our cities “hidden gem”? The westside off of Lafayette Rd.
If you ever want legit ethnic cuisine, go to the west side. Ethiopian, Vietnamese, Mexican…..you’ll find it there.

3. What is your favorite restaurant? This one is hard since Indianapolis has turned into a mecca for foodies. I would say my current obsession is Open Society. I go for brunch, small plates, dinner, or just drinks with friends.

4. Where is your favorite place to take an out-of-town guest? Fountain Square. Starting from Milktooth, down to Bluebeard, then hitting the square. There you can hit up live Music at Hi-Fi, check out art at The Murphy Building and GPC, go duck pin bowling, or just people watch! There is always something fun going on down in the square.

5. Where is the best place to grab a cocktail? Prefer to hit up Mass Ave and always stop at Tinis. They hooked me with their Moscow Mule6. Where is a great place to pick up a unique gift?

6. Where is a great place to pick up a unique gift?  I love Homespun! They have a lot of local, handmade, and items that aren’t mass produced so each gift seems special.7. Where can you get the best cup of coffee?

7. Where can you get the best cup of coffee? Hubbard and Cravens has always been my go to. If you haven’t had the Healthy Elephant, please do.

8. What is your favorite part about living in Indy? The people! I have met so many talented, creative and inspiring people here. You still kind of get that small town feel with more opportunities than one may think.

9. Who is your favorite Indy based artist, designer, writer, or blogger? Artist – Benny Sanders without a doubt. Musician with a hidden talent for drawing, painting and printmaking that has recently surfaced. He is definitely making waves.

10. What would you like to see next for our city? I wish more people would invest into the arts and fashion world as they have in the culinary/restaurant world. There are too many boutiques that close down and local talent that are having to find success elsewhere.

We hope this inspires you to try new experiences in our little slice of the midwest!

Sarah is a leader in supporting local events, Indy based designers, and locally owned boutiques. Her inspiring blog (IndyDressed) is one that captures all the fun our city has to offer and features Sarah’s awesome style. Take a page out of her book and see where you can find her hanging out in Indy.

nada_june2016.JPG

1.What part of Indy do you live in?
Currently live on the far northwest side, close to Zionsville, but I grew up on the far northeast side near Fishers.

2. What is our city’s “hidden gem”?
Our hidden gem is our wealth of festivals and conventions, in my opinion. There really is something for everyone here: events for people who love sports or folk music or world cultures or board games or Kurt Vonnegut’s works or even mac ‘n cheese.

3. What is your favorite restaurant?
With Indy’s amazing culinary industry, it’s a toss up, really. My husband and I both have studied Japanese for years and studied abroad in Sapporo, so our favorite meals tend to involve authentic Japanese food. Sakura (71st and Keystone) and One World Market (near Castleton Square Mall) are regulars on our list—so much that employees at the latter know my taste in Japanese pop music and once even switched the cafe’s music to a playlist of songs from my favorite band. Ramen Ray (71st and Binford), a newer addition, is also scrumptious, and it’s especially nostalgic for us because the chef’s specialty is the style of ramen Sapporo is best known for. If you haven’t tried real ramen—not the brittle stuff that comes in a cheap plastic wrapper and heats up in the microwave, but REAL ramen—do yourself a favor and try it.

We also love Biscuits in Broad Ripple, an unassuming and affordable Mexican restaurant that serves some ah-mazing chilaquiles; Napolese’s smoked salmon pizza with creme fraiche and capers, and the pricier (but worth it!) Oceanaire in downtown Indy, which served my husband the best crab cakes he’s ever tasted.

4. Where is your favorite place to take an out-of-town guest?
When someone comes from out-of-town, I want to show them that Indy’s cooler than our reputation as a flyover city suggests—and to immerse them in an experience they won’t forget. Swing dancing in vintage clothes at the Fountain Square Theatre, carriage rides downtown in December, seasonal pastries almost too beautiful to eat at the Cake Bake Shop …

5. Where is the best place to grab a cocktail?
I love the ambiance of a cozy bar, and right now, my favorite place is Hotel Tango (Virginia Avenue). It’s a small space, but it’s full of rustic charm and within walking distance of a number of restaurants near Fountain Square/Fletcher Place. Plus, it has an amazing limoncello!

6. Where is a great place to pick up a unique gift?
Boomerang BTQ (Mass Avenue) is my spot for all things cute and funky, and I visit West Elm (Fashion Mall at Keystone) whenever they host their “Meet the Maker” events to highlight Indy artisans. If you’re looking for hard-to-find magazines or publications, head over to PrintText (Broad Ripple). The shop’s fashion magazine collection is fabulous!

7. Where can you get the best cup of coffee?
I don’t drink coffee, but I love grabbing hot chocolate from South Bend Chocolate Company on Monument Circle during the winter!

8. What is your favorite part about living in Indy?
What I love most about Indy is the atmosphere—that Hoosier hospitality, as we call it. But it’s more than simply being nice. You often see people encourage others within their own industry to succeed, even if that means more competition for them. We’re all working toward the greater good—a better Indianapolis.

9. Who is your favorite Indy based artist, designer, writer, or blogger ?
This is the hardest question I’ve been asked so far! We have so much talent here, which is one of the reasons I originally began blogging about Indy’s fashion and lifestyle scene.

A few of my favorites (outside of Preppy Guide to Life, of course!):
Nikki Blaine, fashion designer (@nikkiblainecouture)
Stephanie Cope Wilson, graphic designer (@whimandproper)
Emily Deisler, illustrator (@west5thcreative)
Kate Oberreich, artist (@seedandstar)
Laura Walters, stylist (@the_styleriot)

10. What would you like to see next for our city?

Two hopes of mine: That Indy continues building a foundation for reliable and eco-friendly public transportation to rival that of similar-sized cities, and that our city’s pockets of niche “hobby culture” grow and thrive.

We hope this inspires you to try new experiences in our little slice of the midwest!

Kathleen Post’s Guide to Indy

Kathleen Post is a fellow Indianapolis fashion blogger (Lemon Blonde) and a girl about town. She loves the downtown hotspots and knows all the best places to grab coffee with the girls or dinner with the hubby. Take a look at some of her favorite places to be in Indy!

pink-moto-jacket-27

1.What part of Indy do you live in?
I live in Fletcher Place in Downtown Indianapolis

2. What is our city’s “hidden gem”?
I would actually say Fletcher Place! There are so many cute restaurants, bars, and coffee shops. People are always suprised at how much Fletcher Place has to offer.

3. What is your favorite restaurant?
I would have to say Bakersfield- They have the best margaritas, tacos, and chips and salsa. I usually go once a week and NEVER get sick of it!

4. Where is your favorite place to take an out-of-town guest?
That’s a hard question! I love going out for brunch or sweets so probably Milktooth, General American Donut Co., or Cake Bake.

5. Where is the best place to grab a cocktail?
Hotel Tango! It’s also in Fletcher Place. It has a great vibe and amazing cocktails.

6. Where is a great place to pick up a unique gift?
Silver in the City on Mass Avenue has some really fun (and funny) gifts.

7. Where can you get the best cup of coffee?
Calvin Fletcher or Hubbard and Cravens both have great coffee.

8. What is your favorite part about living in Indy?
When you live in Indy, you get the best of both worlds. You get to enjoy everything that a big city has to offer without sacrificing your normal lifestyle. You can live downtown in the heart of the city without paying big city prices. It’s fun and fast paced, but people are nice and still have “Hoosier Hospitality”. There are tons of restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and boutiques all within walking distance- OR you can drive and actually find parking! There is always something going on- a festival, concert, a bike race, a parade-you name it. Indy has so much to offer and they just keep improving. the city has changed SO much in just 5 years. It’s a great place for young professionals right now- the job market is booming and apartment complexes keep popping up. I love how Indy is really catering to young professionals and I think it’s only going to get better from here. Rant over.

9. Who is your favorite Indy based artist, designer, writer, or blogger ?
That’s a tough question! Since I started my blog one year ago, I have met so many other great bloggers, photographers, designers, boutique owners, etc. One of my favorite artists is Wendy Volkmar, she is an amazing painter. I have one of her pieces in my living room and it’s gorgeous. A few of my favorite Indy bloggers are Chandler Nehrt of Candidly Chan and Morgan England of Style on Edge.
10. What would you like to see next for our city ?
I want to see the downtown area to continue to develop with more restaurants and stores. It’s definitely on the upswing, but there are still a few things we are missing. I would love to see a few health food stores pop up downtown. Most big cities have a Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s in the downtown area, but we don’t have many (or any) health food store options. I would love to see more boutiques and shops in the downtown area. I think most boutiques are on the north side, but as the downtown area continues to grow, I hope to see more added.

We hope this inspires you to try new experiences in our little slice of the midwest!

Deborah Dorman’s Guide to Indy!

She is a lady about town and you will never miss her once you meet her! A friend of mine and a wonderful supporter of our cities local talent. You will find her at Ruth Chris, in the evenings, chatting with friends or surrounded by her wonderful family. Take a look at some of Deborah’s favorite Indy hot spots!

405670_10150585253359808_1350227630_n

1. What part of Indy do you live in? I live with my husband, P.A. Nilhagen, on the northside at the bustling 86th and keystone quadrant, at the newest and trendiest hotspot called IRONWORKS. and we are sitting on top of the world.. !!!!

2. What is our cities “hidden gem”? We are a city of HOMES!!! We are fortunate to have some of the most historical and distinguished homes in our great city. We have some very talented architects, designers, and builders.I am very proud to be a part of this aspect of our city as i have served in the residential real estate community for over 23 years.

3. What is your favorite restaurant? Since I currently live on the city’s northside, and at this stage of life, convenience is an important aspect of our quality of life.. we just take an elevator downstairs to our cozy little second kitchen.. SANGIOVESE. that happens to be one of our city’s best Italian restaurants thanks to the owner Chris Evans.. who makes this establishment possible. and he will make sure you can always get a table .. i do have a second favorite which is also close by.. LATE HARVEST KITCHEN with Chef and owner Ryan Nelson who also has developed one our city’s best eateries.. Lucky us..
We are restaurant junkies and love going out and testing all the newest hot spots no matter the location.. We support the LOCALS and are so proud that some of the award winning establishments are in the downtown areas. I feel we are an underrated city of eateries..We just are minus some of the great views that some of the major cities are fortunate to enjoy.. Yet Indy continues to make the magic happen no matter what..

4. Where is your favorite place to take an out-of-town guest? Some of my favorite places to show off Indy is in the the metropolitan downtown areas, with our amazing sporting facilities, restaurants, hotels, museums, historical districts that are being gentrified, our northside Carmel City Center thanks to Mayor Brained and the great developers, the old established firms such as Meridian Kessler, Butler Tarkington and Fountain Square and Fletcher Place and the most popular and trendy Mass Avenue. Our cities motto.. LIVE WORK AND PLAY!!!! and EDUCATE.. Our city’s universities are becoming the pride of this great Hoosier state.. I amazed at the devotion and support from private and public sectors to make this city a major player in the College arena. The best is yet to come..

5. Where is the best place to grab a cocktail? I think one of the best places to grab a cocktail is also an elevator ride down to RUTH CHRIS at the IRONWORKS. I know first hand to get a seat in the house you need to arrive atleast by 430 pm as the restaurant and bar area are usually packed by 630 pm.. If you dont have a reservation, no matter where you live or who you are, there is not a table to be had..the good news is when the Ruth Chris patio is open it is the best place in town for cocktails and live music..great ambiance. My other fav for a quiet cocktail is HARRY AND IZZYS’S Northside.. I always support this establishment as the original owner Harry Roth was a dear friend of mine from many days gone by. and the original owner of St. Elmo’s Steakhouse where Harry had my picture hanging with pride as a young 20 year old model from Wm H Block and Company…and once again the cozy and cool bar area at my second kitchen, Sangiovese. rocks my world.

6. Where is a great place to pick up a unique gift? I am a Boutique Junkie when it comes to shopping It is difficult to name any particular boutique. I am all about supporting the local neighborhood boutiques in the broad ripple, meridian kessler, mass avenue, fountain square, carmel, and the keystone crossing fashion mall areas. Shops are popping up all the time throughout the city..

7. Where can you get the best cup of coffee? The best place to meet for a coffee whether personally or professionally for me is STARBUCKS. since we have one on every corner. So convenient and cozy for great conversation . My new favorite is Tina’s Tearoom as you experience an authentic taste of Great Britain right here in our own back yard in carmel..

8. What is your favorite part about living in Indy? My favorite part of Indy .. I could literally write a book about our great city. I have lived here for over 68 years now and am one of the very few authentic Hoosiers who still call Indy HOME.. I have had the honor to watch our city grow in leaps and bounds over 6 decades.. Can you imagine!!! A perfect example is my grandparents started their business on park avenue off of the currently trendy and popular mass avenue in the 1920’s.. Making the first pair of silk hosiery and silk parachutes for the war. REAL SIK HOSIERY. and now many decades later it is considered one of our downtowns best places to live as the factory itself was converted into lofts , REAL SILK LOFTS. i have a long line of family heritage that has contributed to the growth of this city over 100 years..My fathers family business is well over 100 years old now and walked the streets of south new jersey and virginia avenue and now one of the biggest insurance companies is headquartered a few steps away.. Oh the stories are endless. Yet are deeply planted in my heart and soul.. The absolute pride of our city is that corporate america has chosen to remain here when they could be located anywhere in the world.. The best news, they keep on coming and filling our office parks and downtown high rises..and the world of technology is finding that relocating to Indy both personally and professionally is both cost effective and presents a higher quality of life that is superior to other parts of the world

9. Who is your favorite Indy based artist, designer, writer or blogger? I am an advocate of the art, design and fashion industry right here in our great city. We have so many talented people in the world like the internationally acclaimed Walter Knabe, Constance Scopoletis, Beatriz Artist to name but a few.. Some of the local talent that i predict will be seen on the runways of new york or milan or paris.. nikki blaine, yemisi sanni, and truen james, many talented designers and stylists i have worked with personally have such a bright future.. like danisha green, dlang ferguson, carissa lancaster and lee wang .With regard to fashion and art in interior design in our city we are so fortunate to have some of the grand established firms like Barry Lantz and Stephen Taylor and White Lily Interiors featuring Cathy Clark. Blogging a new wave of our communication world which is exciting to me personally as three of my favorite people personally and professionally top the charts.. Preppy Guide to Life with yours truly Madison Hromadka, The Red’s Shoe Diaries with Jody DeFord, and Kimann Schultz and her Trendy wendy mini series with the Huffington Post.. The three publications in the city that do such a great job with fashion and art and design as they communicate through their pages are Sophisticated Living, Pattern and Indianapolis Monthly..

10. What would you like to see next for our city? The new main attraction to our city needs to be DESTINATION DOWNTOWN. a fabulous shopping mecca with all kinds of designer and unique places to be and a safe environment for all who covet the streets and neighborhoods. A walking capital and a great new mass rapid transit system connecting every part of our city.. We are no longer indianoplace .. I am proud to say we have arrived.. We are Indiasomeplace..!!!!LIVE WORK AND PLAY!!!!

We hope this inspires you to try new experiences in our little slice of the midwest!

Mab Graves Guide to Indy!

03 Sunday Jan 2016

Posted by Madison Eileen in Guide to Indy Interviews, Shopping Local

Happy New Year! Let’s get back to my favorite PGTL series, Guide to Indy. This round, we are talking to one of my very favorite pop surrealist artist, Mab Graves. To say that I have a small obsession with her work is an understatement… I have a mega “fan girl” obsession. She is not only a world renowned artist, but she loves supporting local business and knows some of Indy’s best hotspots! Preppy Guide to Life Mab Graves

1.What part of Indy do you live in? I live in the awesomest part of Indy ^_^ Haha! In Fountain Square.

2. What is our cities “hidden gem”? We have a ton of them! I love the Indianapolis Art Center (http://indplsartcenter.org/). They offer really cool classes with materials you don’t often have access to, they have some great galleries and beautiful gardens.
Also, our Children’s Museum is something I’m really proud our city has. As an auntie I love having such a cool place in our city that is totally 100% for kids – but still interesting and engaging enough that you can go with them and not be bored or overwhelmed as an adult! https://www.childrensmuseum.org/

3. What is your favorite restaurant? Bluebeard on Virginia Ave. Soooooo amazing. I really love interesting, creative and beautiful food. I’m one of those people who if I see is something on a menu I don’t know – THAT”S what I want to eat! A lot of Indy restaurants have the standard same-ol’ same-ol’, but Bluebeards changes their menu weekly and it’s always fabulous. I can confidently walk into Bluebeard, close my eyes and point blindly at the menu and know that whatever comes out to me from the kitchen will be inspired. I have never had anything less than a spectacular meal with them!

4. Where is your favorite place to take an out-of-town guest? I love taking people to Best Chocolate in Town and Midland Arts and Antiques. Best Chocolate is seriously the best chocolate and has the cutest atmosphere. Midland has some of the BEST vintage and really crazy awesome prices too! People from out of town usually pop their tops in Midland because no one does affordable cute vintage like they do!

5. Where is the best place to grab a cocktail? I would have to give it up to the Brass Ring Lounge. I love their 1920’s feel with soft lighting, black and white movies playing silently on screens and some of the nicest bartenders in the city. The servers and staff really make or break any bar and give it its personality – the Brass Rings really shines in that regard for me!

6. Where is a great place to pick up a unique gift? Homespun on Mass Ave. That place is seriously dangerous for me – so much cute and unique! It’s like all the best parts of Etsy – but in a local shop and you don’t have to wait on shipping! I have never walked out empty handed ^_^

7. Where can you get the best cup of coffee? Waaaah V__V I can’t drink coffee anymore! I wish I could.

8. What is your favorite part about living in Indy? Honestly? The people. Growing up I always heard the old “People from the Midwest are so Nice blah blah” and I was like, “whatever!”. That was until I became and adult and travelled a bunch and I realized – people here ARE really nice. And they are really real. I love that. The social climbers, name droppers and phonies don’t fly in our city. We have some really genuine and really cool people here and I love it. I get homesick for it.

9. Who is your favorite Indy based artist, designer, writer, or blogger? You of course! We also have some really awesome artists here. Some of my top Indy Art Throbs are:
Brett Manning http://brettisagirl.com/
Casey Roberts http://wildernessoverload.com/home.html
Amy Earles http://www.pushedunder.com/

10. What would you like to see next for our city? I would love to see a stronger New Contemporary Art scene here in Indy. Don’t get me wrong, we have several great galleries, but we don’t have a lot of New Contemporary, Pop Surrealist and Lowbrow artists and as such we don’t have much in the way of a unified movement or scene. I know in ages past, if you wanted to make it as an artist you had to migrate to one of the Coasts, but now with the age of the Internet, artists can live ANYWHERE! I’m hoping that Indy will start being able to keep its talent and we will be able to cultivate a community of strong creative minds!

We hope this inspires you to try new experiences in our little slice of the midwest!
