Baking for the Holiday

23 Friday Dec 2016

Every Thanksgiving and Christmas my mom and I make pie crust! We have been using the same receipt my entire life. The receipt is from a cookbook my mom received as a gift from my grandparents thirty years ago. Every year I look forward to making pies and pie crust for the holidays. My mom and I love making just the pie crust and then putting jams and jellies on them with coffee or tea. It makes for the perfect holiday breakfast treat or an evening snack by the tree!

Pie Crust Receipt: 8 or 9 inch one crust pie

1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon of shortening or 1/3 cup lard

1 cup of all-purpose flower

1/2 teaspoon of salt

2 to 3 tablespoons of cold water (start with two and then add another if needed)

Cut shortening into flour and salt until the dough is the size of peas. Add water, one tablespoon at a time, tossing with a fork until flower is moistened and pastry almost cleans the side of the bowl. Put dough into a ball shape, flatten with a rolling pin and cut into shapes.

Bake at 475 degrees for 8-10 minutes (until pie crust shapes are golden brown)

Referenced from Betty Crocker’s Cookbook.
